The Lab-STICC was created in 2008 by three founding academic institutions (Télécom Bretagne, UBO and UBS), under the authority of the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). It has been joined so far by two other academic establishments (ENIB and ENSTA Bretagne).
The National Center for Scientific Research, or CNRS, is a public organization under the responsibility of the French Ministry of Education and Research. Founded in 1939, the CNRS aims to evaluate and carry out all research capable of advancing knowledge and bringing social, cultural, and economic benefits for society, contribute to the promotion and application of research results, develop scientific information, support research training, and participate in the analysis of the national and international scientific climate and its potential for evolution in order to develop a national policy. UBO is a multi-site medium-sized university (around 20,000 students), founded in 1971. As a member of the Université Européenne de Bretagne, UBO has made its multidisciplinary nature a true strength in its teaching missions and research policies. Building on the opportunities that Brest offers as a major maritime city, UBO has developed a trans-disciplinary research approach around 4 strategic areas: Marine Sciences, Health, Agronomy and Materials, Maths and ICT, Humanities and Social Sciences. More than 1000 lecturers-researchers and 500 Ph.D. students are developing their research activities at UBO, which is home to 37 laboratories, some of them being supported by prestigious French research institutions, such as CNRS, INSERM, and IRD. Founded in 1995, UBS is a multidisciplinary institution with two main campuses situated in Lorient and Vannes, Brittany, France. It offers academic programmes to its 8,500 students, from bachelor’s level to the doctorate in different areas: arts, social sciences, engineering, computer science, biochemistry, mathematics, law, economics and business. The lecturers-researchers of UBS are active members of 12 research laboratories and are developing recognized research activities in 4 major fields: materials, costal and marine studies, social usages and practices, IT. With over 100 MoUs with foreign institutions worldwide and about 40% of international PhD students, UBS is developping rich international collaborations and is part of a wide international partnership network.UBS web site
Founded in 1977, Telecom Bretagne is a public graduate engineering school, under the aegis of the Ministry for Industry. It is a member of the Institut Mines-Telecom and the Université Bretagne Loire. With a teaching staff of about 160 lecturers-researchers, Télécom Bretagne welcomes each year about 800 Master of Engineering and Master of Science students and more than 200 Ph.D. students, from 40 countries, in the field of Telecommunications and Information Technologies. Telecom Bretagne has two campuses (Brest and Rennes) with excellent teaching record and internationally-renowned research activities. ENIB is a public graduate engineering school, under the aegis of the French Ministry of Education and Research. It is a member of the French National Engineering Schools (ENIs) and the Université Bretagne Loire. Each year, about 80 lecturers-researchers of ENIB delivers professional training for more than 700 students in the fields of ICTS (electronics and computer sciences) and mechatronics. The partnership policy of ENIB has resulted in a wide collaboration network, including 1300 enterprises and 40 academic partners from abroad.ENIB web site
ENSTA Bretagne is a public multidisciplinary graduate engineering school, founded in 1971, under the aegis of the French Defense Ministry. The 200 students, both civilian (80%) and military (20%), who graduate every year from ENSTA Bretagne, are able to design, build and manage complex electronic and mechanical systems. The lecturer-researchers of ENSTA Bretagne are well recognized in their scientific fields, being involved in many research programs with international partners, and have become active members of well-known Brittany research laboratories, like Lab-STICC or IRDL.ENSTA web site
